Summer Lesson Plans

Friday, 30 May 2008

I know that school may be out for most of us for the summer, but I think it is important to continue your child's education.  Just because your kids are on their summer vacations doesn't mean the learning should be on vacation as well.  When learning is fun kids learn easier and quicker.

A to Z Teacher Stuff is a great resource for lesson plans, tips, printables and more and a great site to find summer lesson plans and ideas.  And the best part - it's free!  Which makes it a great site for homeschool material.  Whether you homeschool or not, you will find great ideas that you will be able to do with your child / children and they won't even know their learning!  So check it out for great free homeschool materials.

Oh, and a little bit of advice from me - keep reading!  It will help to reinforce their reading skills.  If you want your child's reading level to improve ( or at least not decline) during the summer, continued reading is the key.  You can find great summer reading programs at you local libraries or just simply make it a routine of reading to your kids every night at bedtime.  And let your kids see you reading.  It will build a lasting love of reading in your children!

My son loves R. L. Stine's  Goosebumps ( I know... he is only 5 ), and enjoys reading them before going to bed.  We would love to hear what your kids are reading right now, so share it with us.  Hope to hear from you!  Enjoy reading!!!

Powerful Superfoods

Thursday, 29 May 2008

While there is no such thing as a 'miracle food' there are some foods that will help you to maintain good health.  There just darn good for you!  Healthy eating is something you can do for yourself and your whole family.  I am concerned with women's health so I found some great healthy foods you can incorporate into your diets:

  • Broccoli - For Vitamin C, fiber, beta carotene and folate.  It is best eaten raw or steamed.  You can toss broccoli into salads or omelets.
  • Nuts and Seeds - For fiber, vitamins and minerals.  You can sprinkle nuts for extra crunch and flavor into cereal, salads and yogurt.
  • Soybeans and Soy Products - For B Vitamins, isoflavones and fiber.  Try low-calorie soy milk in your cereal, or top your yogurt with some roasted soybeans.
  • Blueberries - For Vitamins A and C, potassium, folate, fiber and antioxidants.  Add fresh blueberries to your cereal and keep frozen ones on hand for smoothies, pancakes and desserts.
  • Whole Grains and Whole Grain Breads and Cereals - For B Vitamins and fiber.  You can add whole grains, like cooked brown rice to ground meat for extra body.
  • Tomatoes - For lycopene, Vitamin C and potassium.  Make fresh salsa, put them in your summer salads and puree them with other vegetables and spices for a delicious cold soup.
  • Beans and Legumes - For folate and fiber.  Use beans in place of meat in your favorite chili recipes.  Black beans are great in your favorite brownie recipes.
  • Sweet Potatoes - For Vitamins A and C, beta carotene, potassium and fiber.  Try eating baked sweet potatoes without adding butter and sugar.  Also making baked sweet potato fries is a healthier choice.
  • Salmon, Tuna, Rainbow Trout - For Omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats.  At your next barbeque, throw some fish on the grill.
  • Spinach, Kale, Swiss Chard - for Vitamins A, C, beta carotene, calcium, folate and fiber.  Fill your next lasagna with these leafy greens.
  • Oranges - For Vitamin C, folate and fiber.  Fresh squeezed orange juice is a great way to start the day and the next time you need to deglaze your sauté pan, try using orange juice.

You can add supplements but I truly believe if you incorporate the above foods into your diet you won't need them.I want to add drinking water every day is also important, I know this seems obvious, but there are many people that don't drink water at all.  I also think you should have an occasional indulgence.  Treat yourself to your favorite dessert occasionally.  The tip is moderation, in other words portion control.  You will be living a healthy lifestyle before you know it.  And as an added bonus the benefit of eating the above healthy foods will be weight loss.

I hope you eat healthy, live healthy and love healthy!  Enjoy Life!!!

The New Buzz Word - Stacation

Tuesday, 27 May 2008

What is Stacation, you ask?  It is the new hot word to describe doing things in your own community or area for vacation.  Simply put, a stay a home vacation.  With the ever growing high prices of gas (and everything it effects), people are opting to find things to do in their own hometowns.

In fact, that is what we did this Memorial Day weekend.  We found this wonderful little treasure of fun.  It is called the Little Ponderosa Zoo.  The Little Ponderosa Zoo is a hands on zoo, that the whole family will enjoy!  They also have a mobile zoo where they can bring a zoo to you for your children's parties.  You can have birthday parties there onsite as well.

Our son loves animals and at the Little Ponderosa Zoo he could get up close and personal with many different animals.  Once he got the hang of how to feed them he loved it, even if he did say "that was gross" a few times (especially with the camel).

Another thing of interest is that they have pony camp the first of June each year.  It is for 5 to 10 year olds and we plan on letting our son go to pony camp next year.

If you live in eastern Tennessee or will be visiting, I highly recommend stopping by Little Ponderosa Zoo.  Their web site gives directions.

If you have ever visited Little Ponderosa Zoo let us know what you thought of it or if you have any questions about the zoo feel free to leave a comment.  We would also love to hear about your hometown's great 'Staycations'.  Hope to hear from you!  Enjoy Life!!

Lemonade Recipe

Monday, 26 May 2008

lemons Here is an easy, basic lemonade recipe that cannot be beat!  It is a great drink to make this Memorial Day for your picnics, grilling and Bar-B-Q's.  Just great for any summer day!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 3/4 cups white sugar
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water.  Bring to boil and stir to dissolve sugar.  Allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled.
  2. Use a juicer or microwave the lemons for a few seconds to soften them up and cut in half and squeeze with cut side up (so seeds won't get into cup).  Be sure to leave the pulp but remove any seeds that may be in it.
  3. In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups of water.

I hope you enjoy this great lemonade recipe and if you have a great summer drink recipe share it with us.  Hope to hear from you!  Enjoy your Memorial Day!

How To Change A Flat Tire

Sunday, 25 May 2008

I recently went out of town to visit my family and on the way back, while driving on a busy Interstate I saw a car on the side of the road with a flat. The driver, a woman, was changing it. I really felt bad for her, but then realized she obviously knew how to change it. I on the other hand, am not sure if I would have been able to do so.

I know the basics of changing a flat but fortunately have never been in the situation of having to do it. So this got me to thinking, "if I had a flat would I be able to do it?" Well, I sure don't want to wait until I am in such a situation to find out, so I did some research on how to change a flat tire. If you are a woman who has never changed a tire, this is for you.

Before talking about the steps of changing a flat there are a few things you need to keep in your car at all times.  Make sure that you have a jack, a spare tire, a brick/stone or two and a tool kit (with a socket wrench in it).  Also remember that most flats happen while driving so pull off the road in a place that is as flat as possible and remember to put it in PARK (in a manual transmission put it in reverse).  I know that sounds obvious, but in the moment of panic it can be forgotten.  It is also advised to place a brick or stone under the wheel of the opposite side (diagonal) of the flat to keep it from moving while changing the tire.  Okay I think we are ready now:

  1. Jack up the car.  Jacks will vary by type of car, but chances are your owner’s manual will give you instructions on how to use the one that came with your vehicle
  2. Remove the lug nuts with a socket wrench.  Be sure to not lose the lug nuts!
  3. Take the wheel cover off.
  4. Remove the flat tire.
  5. Put the spare tire on.
  6. Replace wheel cover and tighten the lug nuts back on (tighten them as much as possible).
  7. Using the jack lower the wheel so that it just touches the ground.
  8. Place your tools and flat into your trunk.

It is not recommended to drive your car on a spare tire for long distances.  So, once you are ready to safely pull back onto the road, you may want to head right home and/or make plans for dropping your car off for a new tire. If you are on vacation or on business, you will want to stop at the nearest garage  either to have a new tire put on, or to have it repaired.

I hope you are never in the situation where you need to change a flat but if you are I hope you remember these steps.  I might also suggest practicing changing a tire at home.

If you have a story about changing a flat tire, share it with us.  Hope to hear from you!  Enjoy Life!!!
