'Accidental Friendship' Premieres on Hallmark Channel for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Saturday, 15 November 2008

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving (which this year is November 16 - 22), National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.  My son's school is taking part and our family is doing our "little" part, in helping with the hunger issue.  If everyone does their "little" part maybe we can make sure that no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving.  Go to nationalhomeless.org for more information and ideas of things you can do.

Tonight, November 15, 2008, at 9:00 EST, the Hallmark Channel premieres Accidental Friendship.  From the Hallmark Channel's press release,

“Accidental Friendship,” a Hallmark Channel Original Movie starring Chandra Wilson, Ben Vereen and Kathleen Munroe, is the true-life story of Yvonne Caldwell (played by Wilson), a middle class working woman whose spiral from work and ownership to desperation, destitution, and pushing a buggy on the streets is a sad and familiar tale. Caldwell is befriended by empathetic LAPD officer Tami Baumann out of the love they each have for dogs, and a friendship – tenuous at first – takes hold.

When Wilson, Munroe and Vereen accepted their roles, they took on an experience that not only gave them great acting challenges, but helped open their eyes to the lives of the homeless.

Says Vereen, who plays Wes Smith, a streetbound friend of Yvonne’s, “Having the chance to have that little, vague glimpse into that world is an honor.”

To most of us, they are nameless panhandlers, people living on the fringe of humanity, surviving on the street, barely fending off hunger, poverty and worse. We can’t understand why they would continue to choose such a life or how they even got in such a predicament. “Why don’t they just get help?” we ask ourselves.

As the three actors learned, any of us could easily be in the same spot as the homeless around us.

“Most of us feel like we’re immune to this,” says the real Tami Baumann (who is played by Munroe). “I’ve known many police officers who have gone through a divorce or lost a home – where do they go? Los Angeles is so expensive and the cost of housing puts even full-time working people at risk.”

Says Munroe, “There are a great number of people who had a home and a job and have lost them. Homelessness is hitting home for a lot of people in a big way, especially through this foreclosure crisis.”

Most of us think of homeless people as either mentally ill or alcoholic, though Wilson notes that isn’t always the case. “That’s only about 50% of the homeless population out there. Every case is different.”

Yvonne indeed does have an alcohol problem, but, Munroe says, “This film is a nice piece because it doesn’t play into the negative stereotypes at all. Her alcoholism and homelessness are definitely not incidental because they account for her situation, but you get to know her human side. You can appreciate the person that’s struggling and all of her complexities.”

“Any of us at any time are two paychecks away, one disaster away, one illness away, from being out on the streets,” adds Wilson.

“If you’re the kind of person that blames everybody and everything for why you don’t have what you need in life, then you’re set on a path to make some big mistakes. That’s where Yvonne was in this story. You can convince yourself that this is your choice, and when you want to do something different, you’ll do something different. We don’t realize how bad our circumstance is until we get out of it. The financial crisis today is ensuring that more and more people will never be able to step out from the streets.”

Adds Munroe, “Most of us think of them as people that just decided to quit. But, think about children and how filled with promise they are. No one ever begins in life just to quit.”

It can be a struggle for the homeless to accept help, as Wilson shows in her portrayal of Yvonne as she resists getting treatment for her alcoholism.

“There is a real fear, as Chandra portrays so well, of not being able to make it,” says Munroe. “What if it doesn’t happen? What if she can’t do it? What if she’s not good enough? And without a really substantial support system, it could be impossibly hard.”

Even giving up their meager belongings might make or break an attempt at help. “With Yvonne, it meant she’d have to give up that basket full of crap to fix herself,” Baumann recalls.

“They’re very attached to their basket. It’s nothing but their blanket they sleep on and whatever else that’s their little stash, but it’s their whole world.”

“Yvonne’s is not a Cinderella story. All of her problems don’t resolve at the end of the movie. But today, Yvonne is in treatment and determined to be well. You root for her, heart and soul,” says Wilson.

Baumann’s heart and soul reaches out to those she serves in the very tough LA neighborhood around the 77th Station. “The rise in everyday staples and the declining value of minimum wage has put so many people at risk of being homeless. My heart breaks when I see people working full-time jobs living in doorways and alleys, and any of us could be there and be them.”

Hallmark Channel’s “Hitting Home” encourages every day people to reach out charitably to those on the fringes of life. In catastrophes near and far, Americans are #1 in giving, even when it hurts! Even in recession charitable giving has never fallen as far as the economy.

It is hard to fathom that there are 750,000 homeless Americans who are literally ignored either intentionally or subconsciously.  It seems that people feel threatened by homeless people.  I'm not sure if this is because they feel that a homeless person is beneath them or out of fear.  Fear that it could be them.  I believe it is the latter.  In today's economy many of us could be two or three paychecks away from being homeless.

Just think "if it were you and/or your family, would you want to be ignored?"  Tonight watch Accidental Friendship, and get inspired.  And as a side note, Chandra Wilson who stars in Grey's Anatomy is a phenomenal actress and I look forward to seeing her in this role.

Pursuit of Happiness... should be for more than one week a year

Saturday, 8 November 2008

Did you know that the second week of November is Pursuit of Happiness week?  This year that's November 8 - 14, 2008.  I like the idea of Pursuit of Happiness week and hope I strive for happiness every week.  Shouldn't we all be in the pursuit of happiness, everyday?

Sometimes we get caught up in all the mundane day to day tasks and responsibilities that we may forget to pursue happiness.  So for this week make a conscious effort to pursue your happiness... and remind others to do the same.

A few tips on how to find happiness:

  • Figure out what is important to you right now -  Is it time with family or a better position at work?  Or more "me" time or better health?  The possibilities are endless... just write down the first things that pop in your head.
  • Make happiness a priority in you life -  Think about the times in your life when you were truly happy.  Remember the feeling and actively strive to attain it now.
  • Take baby steps -  Start with little things each day that make you feel good.  Do something that relaxes you and makes you feel good; like taking 15 minutes to read, take a bath, meditate, call a friend, take a walk, just to name a few.  Just take the time and do it.
  • Train yourself to be an optimist -  Think of the bright side and let go of negative thoughts.  Every time you start to think a negative thought - stop!  Replace it with a positive thought.  It may seem difficult (and yes, at times it is), but if you practice thinking positively, you will be surprised at just how easy it starts to become.

If you really want to be happy - you will be.  And pay it forward... do something that will make someone else happy, without expecting anything in return.

Here are some free e-cards you can send to family and friends for Pursuit of Happiness week.  This week would also be a good time to watch Pursuit of Happyness, starring Will Smith.  If you haven't seen it yet... I highly recommend it!  If you have seen it already... watch it again.

Here are two web sites that are perfect for Pursuit of Happiness week... and everyday:

  1. eHappyLife - I discovered this site recently and must tell you it is one of the best places to help you find your happiness.  On Sundays you can read their Life's Lessons.  I'm still reading them and hope to get caught up with them all soon.  Excellent reads and excellent motivators.
  2. The Quote Garden - a collection of inspirational quotations to inspire happiness.

One last and very important thing... be thankful.  Be thankful for what you do have and where you are at this time of your life.  Everyone can find something, regardless how small, that they can be thankful for.

My wish for you is that you will find happiness in the smallest of things; and before you know it, you'll receive happiness in the biggest of things.  Happy Pursuit of Happiness week!

When Life Takes A Turn...Are You Resilient?

Thursday, 7 August 2008

On the Today Show this morning with Kathie Lee and Hoda, they were talking about how some people are more resilient than others.  We all know someone that has a lot of bad things happen to them and they seem to bounce back like it was nothing.

I think this is important!  When someone stays in a 'woe is me' or 'pity party' mode their situation can't change.  You are so focused on the negative that positivity can't get in.

Kathie Lee said something that made a lot of sense.  She was saying that when she had some bad things going on in her life...while she was focusing on herself things just didn't get better.  However, as soon as she took the focus off of herself her situation improved.

I know we all have bad things happen to us.  Sometimes very tragic things.  I do know from my own experiences and of those around me, that we bounce back from things easier and quicker when we put others before ourselves.

Now, this doesn't mean to not put yourself first.  I know we mothers need to take care of ourselves, because if we don't we won't be able to take care of others.  What I mean to say is, when it comes to bad things in our lives, if we focus on our loved ones, or on others that may be less fortunate then ourselves, what ever is going on in our lives will be less important.

Do you handle stressful situations well?  If you'll put this theory to the test I bet you will find out you are more resilient then you think!

DoSomething.Org

Tuesday, 5 August 2008

DoSomething.org, is an  organization that empowers teens to take action in their communities.

At Do Something they encourage young people to create their own vision for making a difference in their community by providing resources and support.

From the www.dosomething.org web site, their mission statements says:

We believe young people have the power to make a difference. It is our aim to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of do-ers: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.

Our website is a community where young people learn, listen, speak, vote, volunteer, ask, and take action to make the world a better place. Currently, only 23% of this generation actively volunteers. Our hope is to create a do something generation: a world where more than 51% of young people are involved with community action.

Only a hand full of states are using Do Something at this time but hopefully every community in every state will soon join in.

We hear of all the bad things teenagers do but I think we have far more brilliant, gifted and good kids out there, doing wonderfully kind things. You can see them in action at DoSomething.org.

You can check out how American Idol winner Jordin Sparks is teaming up with Staples to supply needy children with school supplies; and how you or your child can do something similar in your community.

If you or a child in your life is looking for charities to support or maybe you want to start a project in your community to help those less fortunate go to dosomething.org today.

Revenge Of The Nerd Girls - They're Smart And Sexy

Friday, 18 July 2008

Nerd girls...what could be sexier?  Not a thing, in my opinion!  I saw a segment this morning on the Today Show about a group of young ladies that refer to themselves as the "Nerd Girls".  They say it is nice to have a group that is all girls to get together and work on engineering projects, etc.

Of course they already have their critics.   The criticism is that they are using sex to sell science.  All I know is that I found this story to be very motivating for all of our young girls.  It shines a spotlight on girls who are smart in science and math.

They said they are trying to show how diversified "nerd girls" can be.  They are smart, beautiful, athletic and more.  I don't have a daughter but if I did I would hope that she would be a Nerd Girl!

I hope more and more girls join this group of smart girls.

Cancer Survivor From Florida Wins A Dream Wedding

Thursday, 17 July 2008

wedding_at_the_alter A Tampa woman who was given only a year to live four years ago defied the odds and celebrated another victory - she and her fiancee won a $100,000 dream wedding according to this Associated Press article.

This story made my day...my week.  This is definitely a feel good story full of hope for anyone diagnosed with cancer.

Courtney Dempsey, 33 and Gary Courtney, 37, were among 40,000 couples entered in the US Magazine's wedding contest.

Dempsey was diagnosed with late-stage melanoma four years ago and was given less than a year to live.  Happily she survived beyond that and began dating Courtney.  And then soon after, doctors said she needed a double mastectomy.

He asked her to move in with him so he could help her recover (a good sign he was husband material).  The wedding date is set for September.

In the article, it says Dempsey plans on following tradition and will take her groom's name.  Meaning she will go by Courtney Courtney.

She says, "I'm in sales.  No one will ever forget my name."

It sounds like she has such a great attitude!  Congratulations Courtney!

I hope you find this story as uplifting as I do.  I think we could all use a little inspiration in our day.  If you have an inspirational story or inspiring thought, share it with us.  Hope to hear from you.  Enjoy life!!!

The Man...The Myth...The Legend - A Father's Day Tribute

Sunday, 8 June 2008

I recently made some T-shirt designs for Father’s Day and my stepfather was on my mind while coming up with ideas.  And when I did the design ‘The Man…The Myth…The Legend’, I could not help but think of him.  He is a remarkable man!

You know the old adage ‘anyone can become a father but it takes someone special to be a dad’; well I know it sounds so hokey but it is so true.  My step-dad married my mother in 1977 when I was thirteen, my sister was eleven and my brother was ten.  My mother couldn’t have any more kids so he knew that they would never have children of their own together.  From day one, he accepted us and treated us as his own.  I know without a doubt that he truly thinks of us as his children.  No father could love his own biological kids anymore than my step dad loves us.

He sacrificed from the start by working two jobs to provide for us.  He worked long hours for years so that we could have what we needed and most of what we wanted.  And not one time in the last thirty-one years has he ever complained or had regrets.

Now, as a grandfather (he is known as Poppy), he dotes and spoils them rotten.  I think that is a grandparent’s job though.  There is nothing he wouldn’t do for his children and grandchildren.

I have so much respect and admiration for him!  He IS The Man…The Myth… The Legend!  You are so loved Dad!  Happy Father’s Day!

If you would like to tell us about your father, we would love to hear it.  Hope to hear from you.  Enjoy Life!!!

Top 10 Reasons I Love Working At Home

Tuesday, 3 June 2008

I love working at home

It is easy for me to come up with reasons why I love working from home.  And I do love being a WAHM ( work at home mom )!  Over at SparkPlugging-WAHM 2.0, Kelly has a new blog meme for wahms - and there's a gift. She is asking moms why they love to work from home and here are my top ten reasons:

  1. Being at home everyday with my son - I don't miss out on his growing up.
  2. I spend more time with my husband.
  3. Being my own boss.
  4. Setting my own schedule - the flexibility to work early mornings and have the rest of the day for my family or I can work at night.  The point is I work when I want to work.
  5. I can make as much money as I want - if I'm willing to put in the time the skies the limit.  I don't have to wait for a yearly raise.
  6. No commuting - with today's soaring gas prices this one is a big plus.
  7. I can take off in the middle of the day to see a matinee with my family or take a whole day off when I want.
  8. It is a great creative outlet.
  9. I can stay in my jammies - all day if I want (I don't, but just knowing I can, is nice).
  10. Saves money - Not to mention gas money as I mentioned above, but child-care, money spent on lunches and expenses for clothing.

If you are a wahm make a post about why you love working from home and let Kelly at sparkplugging know by clicking on the image.  I would love to hear why you love working at home so feel free to comment.  I hope to hear from you!  Enjoy Life!!!

Get Organized - De-Clutter Your Home And Remove Stress In Your Life

Tuesday, 3 June 2008

Is your home, office and car full of clutter?  Is it hard for you to relax?  Are you disorganized?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions then it is time to de-clutter; get organized and relax!  If you want to live a clutter free life, be more organized and de-stress, it is easier than you think.  Take the first steps today and you will be reducing stress in your life almost immediately.

If your home is cluttered, somewhat disorganized or overstuffed, relaxation can be virtually impossible.  Living in a cluttered home can create constant low-grade stress and subtly, but steadily, drain your energy.  The good news is...a few simple strategies can put you on the path towards managing your clutter and stress.  Remember organization is not a one-time deal...it requires a hands on daily routine to bring calm to your household and your time.   Here are some how to declutter tips:

  • Survey your belongings - examine what you have and how you store it.  Sell or donate what you don't use.  If you have forgotten you had it, it is time to get rid of it.  This is a great time of year for a garage or yard sale.
  • Keep things you use frequently in easily accessible places.  The adage 'everything has a place and everything in its place,' is a good one to adhere to here.
  • Get boxes or containers for items you use only seasonally or will be storing such as holiday decorations or sports gear.  Set up a box for items that need repair (and get them repaired within a 6-week time frame or toss it).
  • Keep important papers ( birth and marriage certificates, real estate deeds ) in a fireproof safe box.  Create a file for personal documents such as insurance policies and Social Security cards and the like.
  • Develop a finance file for unpaid bills, bank statements and income tax papers.
  • Store home-maintenance papers ( warranties, receipts, manuals ) in another place. Like in a folder kept in a desk drawer designated for just such things.
  • Create consistent, regular "systems" for who will do what and when.  Dived household chores, and schedule when they should be accomplished.
  • Assign certain days for paying bills.  I highly recommend taking advantage of online or computer-bill paying.  It is a terrific time saver.
  • Manage your time efficiently by planning activities on a calendar and making to-do lists.  Take advantage of days off or weekends to plan meals for the week ahead, and complete your grocery list at the same time.  Keep track of all family activities and rehearsals, practices and work schedules on one master sheet.
  • When you get your mail each day, immediately eliminate what is junk and put each correspondence in its place (remember to shred and recycle paper).  If you take care of mail as soon as you get it now...don't start a pile that you'll 'deal with' later.  That leads to clutter.
  • Emails - take the same approach as outlined for regular mail...touch it or read it only once.  When you open your email assign it a home, either 'needs attention' or 'action completed' folder.  Make an effort to handle email at certain times a day rather than throughout the day.
  • Get into the habit of cleaning up after yourself.  Put things back into their place right away.
  • Take a few minutes at the end of the day to plan for the next day.  You can fix lunches for the next day while you're fixing dinner today.  You can lay out clothes for you and the kids before going to bed.  Keep a box by the door where children leave their gym bags, homework, or book bags so everyone knows where their things are during the morning rush.  All these tips help keep things calmer in the morning.

As you develop stress relieving habits in your daily life, you should be able to handle the stress you do experience, leading to a happier, healthier life.  Just remember a cluttered home leads to a cluttered mind.  If you can de clutter your surroundings and get organized, it will lead to stress reduction.  I promise you that if you start organizing clutter you will be reducing stress in your life.  Start living a clutter free life today!

If you have any tips on how to declutter or some stress management tips or on how to get organized, we would love to hear them.  Hope to hear from you!  Enjoy Life!!!
