New Web Site - criminalsearches.com - Is Your Neighborhood Safe

Monday, 21 July 2008

Have you heard about the new web site from Peoplefinders that enables you to search for criminals in your own neighborhood.  CriminalSearches.com is a free criminal search site that equips consumers with up-to-date information on criminals and sex offenders in their own communities.

In theory, this web site is a wonderful thing.  Especially for single women and families with children.  It provides you with the opportunity to check out a neighborhood before purchasing a home to make sure it is safe.

I checked out criminalsearches.com and plugged in my address, as well as everyone else's address I know, to see if there are any criminals living amongst us.  The thing you have to be aware of is that not "all criminals are alike".  What I mean is that they list criminals with V (violent) records, S (Sexual) crimes and O (other) all together.  And O (other) can be, and most likely is, a traffic violation, such as speeding.

When you go to the site, click on Neighborhood Watch, then type in the address you want to check out.  A map of that neighborhood pops up with letters representing what type a crime that person has committed.  There is a  legend above the map to tell you what each letter represents.

As I said I think that this site can be very beneficial in finding a neighborhood that is safe (or safer) to live in.  If you have children you can check to see if there are any sex offenders nearby that you need to be aware of.

However, I think that this site could be harmful if not used with common sense.  Just remember that you could find your name on there if you have had a speeding ticket.

So just don't jump to the conclusion that your neighborhood, or potential neighborhood is a cesspool of evil crime doers.

What do you think of criminal searches?  If you have an opinion, we would love to hear it!

Family Leisure us

I can understand why families would like to have this service, but it seems to be an invasion of privacy. I guess it would vary depending on the severity of the crime, but if someone has done their time in prison or paid fines for such offenses as traffic violations or other minor offenses, then they should not be singled out in my opinion. This may also affect the values of homes or marketability for innocent people simply because an offender moved in to their neighborhood.

criminalsearches website is bogus! It should be shut down!!
They have records of sealed and expunged crimes. Once a person has had their record sealed or expunged it is no longer public record. Criminalsearches does not update their site and it is completely out of date!
They also do not have a phone number to call so people who have false and misleading information on their site can make a complaint!!

I am shocked this site is still running. The FCC should be involved, as showing a record of a sealed or expunged crime is illegal!! criminalsearches are criminals!!!!

Horrible inaccurate site!
This site has records up for public view that have been expunged and sealed. This is completely illegal...what irresponsible hypocrites!

I just moved into our new home. I too used this website to search the area prior to closing. I would highly recommend it. The house we were going to purchase prior to this one, we found there was a child molester two streets over.

I think criminalsearches.com is a site that people can make well informed decisions in what area they move into. Family Leisure said it seemed to be an invasion of privacy, but not really. The reason I say that is because the criminal didn't care about the rights of the victim, nor did he care about invading anyone's privacy when he invaded their lives. I think the site should only go back ten years as there is a point in time when people should be completely exonerated from what they did in the past. If the site goes back just ten years, it's still current enough for other crimes to be committed by the same criminal and people should be aware of it at all cost.

Kim said the site should be shut down, but like researching the right doctor to go to, why not be able to search the right neighborhood as well?

I should also clarify something. Sometimes people can make a bad decision and get in trouble for it, but when it comes to molesting a child or raping someone, the search should go back farther than ten years. An intentional act that destroys the integrity of a person should be taken back farther, depending on the crime.
