Mommy Bloggers on Oprah

Monday, 6 April 2009

oprah-winfrey I cannot begin to tell you how exciting this is to me.  I am a mom.  I have a blog. I'm a mommy blogger!  And today - let mom blogs unite.

I know that the Today Show had a brief segment on mommy bloggers a few weeks ago ... but on Oprah today, April 6, the entire show's topic is The Secret Lives of Moms.

Who will be representing us - (via Skype) Heather B. Armstrong from Dooce, Mindy Roberts from The Mommy Blog, BlogHer CE Karen Walrond from Chookooloonks, Daphne Brogdon from CoolMom and Heija Nunn from The Worst Mother in the World.  Also appearing via Skype will be Vicki Glembocki, author of The Second Nine Months.  And joining Oprah in the studio will be Trisha Ashworth and Amy Nobile, co-authors of I'd Trade My Husband for a Housekeeper and actor Cheryl Hines, star of ABC's series In The Motherhood.

Is this a fair representation of moms in the blogosphere?  I think so.  I know the most famous and controversial of the above mentioned mommy bloggers is Heather Armstrong from Dooce.  In fact, you can search for Dooce and find "Dooce haters".

I think the controversy is that many mom bloggers do not consider Dooce a "mom blog".   And just because you have a child, a blog and write about your child occasionally - does this make you a mommy blogger?

With this argument many people wouldn't consider this blog, Blog by Donna, a mommy blog - but that is exactly what I would classify it under.  I am a mommy blogger!  And proud of it!  I have many things to talk about - my son and being a mother is just one aspect of me.  I'm relatively new to blogging, April 1 was Blog by Donna's one year anniversary.

I write about whatever is on my mind or going on in my life.  What movies or shows I'm watching and what's going on in the news to what I'm cooking for my family.  I also find blogging to be therapeutic.  And I hope I share things that can help other mothers in some small way.

I've known for quite some time that mom blogs were all the rage.  In fact, if you are a mother and you aren't blogging - um.. why not?  You really should start.

Seriously, what's stopping you?  As a mom you have one of the most powerful voices.  You are a woman.  And we know that women make the majority of the purchase decisions.  More and more women are either the top breadwinners or sole breadwinners in many families today.

As a mother you have you so much wisdom to impart.  Through your parenting skills or even lack thereof, you have information that could be valuable to other mothers.  We can learn from each other and most importantly - support each other.  Today, more than any other time, we have a far-reaching voice.  With a blog we can potentially reach millions of people.

So I hope you join me today in watching Oprah (check your local listings) - and maybe you will get inspired to start your own mom blog.  If you can't watch it today be sure to DVR or TIVO it.  And I would love to hear what you think of the show!

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this episode. I was one of the moms featured (though by "featured" I must admit only one sentence of my 60 minutes of tape was used. I was just thrilled to be part of this show and have the opportunity to attend the taping.
I do think it would have been nice to include more "mom bloggers" than just one. I have to admit, I had never heard of the woman featured. I too write a blog and I am a mom. Yet, my blog is more about my life as a woman, friend, wife, daughter than it is about being a mom.
I do have a few entries about being a part of this episode. I would love to share them with you.

I Watched the Oprah show and I could not beleive the moms who said their kids went 3 weeks without a bath. Get off the blog and do your job.

@Mary: I agree that 3 weeks sounds extreme. But I'm not sure (can't remember) if the mom in question was talking about older children or an infant. Because doctors will tell you not to bathe babies too often - once a week can be enough with sponge baths daily.

But I do see what you mean... because I went 3 days once without giving my son a bath (I was sick) and I felt like the worst mother in the world. But who am I to judge... I have no idea what was going on in her life at the time. And as the saying goes - until you've walked a mile in someone shoes...

As a mommy blogger, and a runner, I love the musings of other moms in the blogsphere. Their voice and stories are helpful and insightful (usually) for what's to come. As a blogger, I'm glad to be able to share my stories - I have a handful of followers some of whom comment and some of whom email with questions and comments.

Hi, I stumbled onto your blog just as I was trying to pass some info on the mommy bloggers from the Oprah show to a new mommy blogger. I actually saw a repeat of this Oprah show here in Singapore a few weeks ago and it has made me think about starting a blog or two. Or perhaps it's the sign I need to get off my backside and do what I keep wanting to do for years -write. I am like you but my son is 3 yrs old and we live in Singapore currently. It's comforting to know I'm not alone in the world of motherhood and femalekind in general thanks to blogs like yours and the ones I saw on Oprah.
